Development of optical sensors based on porous photonic crystals

    Abstract

Mesoporous oxides thin films are materials with high specific surface and highly ordered monodisperse pores, with pore size range between 2 and 50 nm. The synthesis of these materials combines sol gel reactions with evaporation-induced self-assembly of surfactants. The mesopore walls can be modify by a functionalization process, giving rise to functional materials. Sequential deposition of mesoporous films allows the synthesis of multilayered materials known as one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) with high porous network accessibility. When a noble metal layer is in contact with these PCs, a Tamm plasmon resonance is developed.
In this work, we explored the building of PCs and Tamm-based devices to evaluate their performance as liquids and gas sensors. The synthesis of these stacks of mesoporous films was performed using dip and spin coating techniques. Some of the parameters that control such processes were modified in order to obtain films with a wide variety of thicknesses and porosities. The structures obtained were characterized by ellipsometry, ellipsometric porosimetry and electron microscopy. From the optimization of the synthetic procedure to build PCs, optimal conditions for the synthesis and processing of Tamm plasmon-based devices were developed. The optical and structural properties of all the systems were analyzed using UV-Visible spectroscopy, TEM and SEM. At this stage, highly reflective PCs were obtained, with band gaps on the entire visible range. Tamm mode-devices were obtained by Au deposition on top of the PCs. To control the selectivity of these systems, an organic molecule was attached to the pore surface, modifying the layers’ hydrofilicity.
Finally, the sensing capacity of the devices was evaluated under two conditions: immersion in alcohols and exposure to solvents vapors. All tested systems were responsive to changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium. From these measurements, sensing parameters such as sensibility, selectivity and response time were evaluate and Tamm plasmon devices resulted more efficient in vapor sensing.
To conclude, the results obtained in this work are a fundamental step towards the development of PCs and Tamm plasmon based optical sensors, with a good response both under vapors exposure and solvents immersion.
