    Abstract

Thermal conductivities of two Zn-base alloys used in hot-dip galvanizing process, Zn-0.2wt per cent Al and Zn-0.2wt per cent Al+0.015wt per cent Fe, were determined by inverse modelling at different temperatures. The thermal histories needed as input of the model were obtained by means of directional solidification (DS) experiments. In the DS experiment five thermocouples were placed at different heights in the sample to register the temperatures during the cooling of the alloys. The thermal conductivity was determined in the solid range at 200 C degrees, 300 C degrees and 400 C degrees, and in the liquid range at 420 C degrees. The obtained values seem to agree fairly well with the values of literature, specially for the case of Zn-Al+Fe. In the liquid range, for both alloys, the values of thermal conductivity obtained were far from the ones of pure Zn at the corresponding temperatures. The solidification path, i.e. the relationship between the volume fraction of solid with temperature, was also determined for these two Zn-base alloys. The determination was performed using a single pan thermal analysis (SPTA). A set of three experiments was done under the same conditions for each alloy. The results have shown a good reproducibility. The liquidus and solidus temperatures of the alloys were also determined by this method.
