Effects due to oxygen vacancies in the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 manganite

    Abstract

Within the complex oxides family, manganites are extremely interesting due to the variety of physical phenomena they display. Among the most important ones we find the colossal magnetoresistance, the half-metallic behaviour and the ferroelectricity, to name a few. These features promote a wide range of applications of this material ranging from spintronic devices, ceramic cathodes of solid oxide fuel cells and resistive random access memory cells. The strong interplay among the orbital, charge, and spin degrees of freedom which is characteristic of the manganites plays a fundamental role in the phenomena previously mentioned and therefore, many of the observed properties in manganites are modulated either by doping or defects such us oxygen vacancies. We focus this work in the latter aspect, studying the influence of oxygen vacancies over the structural and electronic properties of the La(1-x)SrxMnO3 manganite.
Using ab-initio calculations we have modeled films of different thickness, corresponding to the composition La2/3Sr1/3MnO3. One of the aims of our work has been to evaluate the formation energy of the vacancies, generated on the surface and also in the bulk. We have been able to cuantify the difference in the formation energy of a vacancy produced on the surface or within the bulk structure. Moreover, we have observed that there is a monotonic trend of increasing the energy along the thickness of the film reaching a constant value towards the bulk formation energy.
Another aim has been to characterize the crystal structure and with this purpose, a number of parameters have been measured, such as the tilting of the octhaedra MnO6, the buckling of the Mn ions and the bonding angle subtended by Mn-O-Mn ions. In order to fulfill this objective, it was necessary to define those parameters, taking into account they should be valid for the perfect bulk structure, as well as in the presence of a surface which reduces the symmetry of the system, and also when a vacancy is generated, producing a local perturbation within the crystal lattice. Our results show that the tilting of the octhaedra is reduced towards the surface, compared to the bulk reference values and that the buckling of the Mn ions, which is not present in bulk, reaches a maximum at the surface. The bonding angle Mn-O-Mn increases towards the surface, in agreement with the reduction of the octhaedra tilting.
Finally, we have evaluated the density of states characterizing the electronic structure of these systems, finding that the influence of the surface as well as the oxygen vacancies is mainly observed in the Mn orbitals.
