Nanocrystalline cathode perovskite structure for fuel cells intermediate temperature solid oxide

    Abstract

In the permanent search of generating energy in a clean and efficient manner, fuel cells have great interest. There are different types of cells, with important differences in the application, size, cost, and scope of operation. In particular, solid oxide(SOFC) fuel cells are interesting by its high efficiency and flexibility in the choice of fuel, and can operate with both hydrogen and hydrocarbons, but have difficulty requiring a high operating temperature.Currently working intensively to reduce the operation temperature between 500 and 750°C(IT-SOFC).
In this thesis we studied the properties of materials nanostructured of mixed Ionic conduction and electronic (MIECs), with structure perovskite single or double, which can be applied as cathodes for IT-SOFCs. The research focused on two important aspects:the effect of the type of nanostructure and the composition of the cathode in electrochemical electrode performance and the kinetics of the reduction of oxygen (ORR) reaction.
Were prepared and characterized nanostructures of La0.6Sr0.4Co1-yFeyO3- whit y = 0.2; 0.5 and 0.8 (LSCF) with structure simple perovskite, and Ln0.5Ba0.5CoO3-, Ln = La; Sm or Gd (LnBCO), with double perovskite structure for ordering of site A cations (Ln = Gd and Sm). These materials were deposited by thick film technique and sintered on Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9(CGD) ceramic electrolyte, forming symmetrical cells [cathode/GDC/cathode].
By means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM),the formation of porous nanostructures wire and tubular type is observed. The studies by diffraction (XRD)showed the formation of phases expected for these materials. In the case of the LSCF nano materials studies were also performed byX-ray absorption spectroscopy (both near and away from the edge of absorption techniques known as XANES and EXAFS, respectively) and Mössbauer Spectroscopy. The analysis of the electrochemical properties of cathodes was carried out using the technique of spectroscopy of electrochemical impedance (EIS) depending on the temperature and partial pressure of oxygen. The cathodes with nanostructure type wire presented best properties electrocatalysis. There placement of Fe by Co in LSCF materials didnot significantly affect their performance electrocalytic. In the case of LnBCO cathodes, the best performance corresponded to Ln = La, has no double perovskite structure bycations in site A disorder.
In addition, a study of the processes that limit the ORR. The analysis of the data revealed that, for this type high specific area cathodes (which therefore pose a very significant number of reaction sites), the ORR is limited by the diffusion of oxide ions O2- inthe material volume. It is important to notethat the nanostructuring increases edge grain/volume relationship, which favoring the total ionic conduction and the conductivity in grain boundary it is greater than the volume.
